Types of Driver’s Licence in Ontario

Did you know Ontario has 12 classes of driver’s licences? That makes sense, though, because not all vehicles are created equal. So, which one do you have or need? Find out here:

Types of Driving Licences in Ontario

Class G

This licence is the most important one which is used for every vehicle except motorcycles. You can use it to drive any car, small van, or truck (and even tow them as long as the weight is less than 11,000 kg.).

However, applying for this license means going through a long licensing process that spans around 20 months. Here are two licences you’ll get before you become a full G driver:

Class G1

With this licence, you can only drive G-class vehicles with an accompanied driver, and highways are out of the question.

Class G2

With a G2 licence, you can drive without an additional driver, but some restrictions still stay in place.

Class M

M is the motorcycle licence that allows you to drive motorcycles, motor tricycles, Vespas, and mopeds. You can still drive G-class vehicles but as a G1 driver.

Class M licence also accompanies two graduated licences, including:

Class M1

With an M1 licence, you can drive vehicles for up to three months, but of course, no highways, night driving, or alcohol.

Class M2.

A step forward from M1, you must use this licence for at least two months before going for the riding test

Other Licence Classes

All these licence classes require the driver to at least hold a valid G licence before applying for them.

Class D is for vehicles that are over 1,000 kg, including tractors and trailers if they are less than 4,600 kg.

Class A will allow you to drive tractor-trailer vehicles and those greater than 4,600 kg.

Class B will let you drive school buses and vehicles under Class C, D, E, and F vehicles.

Class C is for regular bus drivers, but it also lets you drive vehicles under D and F.

Class E is for driving short buses with at most 24 passengers.

Class F will let you drive ambulances or any buses with a capacity of 24 passengers.
